DO’S AND DONT’S FOR HAIR HEALTH

by Hair Magazine

Hair magazine rounded up some of our favourite people to help us give you a guide to healthy hair.

DO detox your hair. Your hair won’t benefit from just one wash, always shampoo twice. The first wash will cleanse your hair and the second will deposit the active ingredients in the shampoo. As well as this, invest in a good clarifying shampoo to use once every two weeks or whenever you feel like your hair needs a deep clean from other products. We recommend using the Revlon Professional RE/START Purifying Micellar Shampoo.

DON’T attempt any DIY job on your hair. While you may think at the time that you’re saving money, fixing the issue will cost more money and time than if you went to a professional in the first place. Visiting a professional will ensure you achieve the colour and style that you really want. No more trying to fix crooked haircuts, leading to a bob you never wanted.

DO invest in the best when it comes to looking after your hair, especially if you’re not getting the results you’re after. Try and buy professional products, as you really do get what you pay for. You wouldn’t buy a cashmere coat and not get it dry cleaned, so treat your hair to the same rules.

DON’T suffer in silence. If you’re struggling to blow-dry a new look or don’t know how to use the products you’ve been recommended, then speak up. A good stylist should always give you tips on how to maintain your hair at home.

DO schedule all your cut and colour appointments at the start of the year. This way you can ensure your hair looks its best all year round. It also means you don’t have to stress about your roots while the salon is booked up. This is when you’re most likely going to reach for a box dye and regret it!

DO improve your diet for shiny, healthy hair. What you get out is what you put in, so make sure you eat lots of fruit and veg and drink at least two litres of water a day.

DON’T be a time saver on those tangled strands and reach for your hairbrush when you get out of the shower. You should never brush your hair when its wet, always use a wide comb to avoid breakage.

DO resolve to condition, condition, condition! We are all guilty of not applying a treatment to save time, but by using a treatment once or twice a week and you will start to see some incredible results!

DON’T stick to the same stylist if you’re unhappy with your hair – start looking around for a new salon. If you see someone who’s hair you like – ask them where they get their hair done. Word of mouth really is the best recommendation. Book in to have a free consultation to a few salons and pick which one you like best.

DO always look after your tools properly. Wash your brushes and combs regularly in lukewarm soapy water to get rid of grease and old product build-up. Chemicals and oil will eventually build up and ultimately affect your hair. By cleaning the filter on your hairdryer, you will enhance its efficacy, wipe down your straighteners and other styling products to make sure you don’t transfer grease onto freshly washed hair.

DON’T scorch your hair by holding your hairdryer too close or on too hot a setting. A medium heat and speed can be much kinder to your hair and doesn’t affect your drying time.

DO a little dramatic colour change – it’s a sure-fire way to change up your look. If you’re blonde, why not take the plunge and become brunette, or test out the myth to see if blondes really do have more fun!

DON’T buy a 2-in-1 shampoo! While you may think you’re saving time, shampoos and conditioners work in completely different ways and the only way to properly cleanse and condition is to do it individually.

DO take a break from heat. Curling, straightening and styling using heated appliances are great for creating styles but use them too much and your hair will end up being damaged. Try to cut back and your hair will thank you for it!

DON’T wash your hair in the bath, the soapy residue will cling to your hair making it look flat and dull. Always rinse your hair with clean water to make sure your locks are getting a good wash.

DO always use the nozzle on your hairdryer. It allows enough space between the hairdryer and the cuticle, so prevents excess damage. Remember to always direct the airflow down the hair shaft for a smoother finish and end with a cold blast to seal the cuticle and lock in the shine. We recommend using the Cloud Nine Airshot Pro.

DON’T stop going for regular trims, even when wanting to grow your hair. Your hair won’t grow quicker – it will just result in poor condition and appearance.

DO break the ultimate naughty hair habit and stop tying your hair back with elastic bands. Avoid splitting hairs by tying your hair back loosely with silk scrunchies or clips.

DON’T use heated appliances without using a heat protection product, it’s like sunbathing without sun cream. We recommend the Beauty Works 10-in-1 Miracle Spray.

DO look after your colour. If your blonde is brassy or your dark is dull, keep your shade looking bright by investing in colour maintenance products. Day-to-day wear and tear can cause your colour to fade. Why spend so much on colouring your hair, then not look after it properly. Shine like you should with the right products!
