Seems like light years away when HAIR magazine held its 2019 HAIR AWARDS – but when we did at London’s beautiful Globe Theatre – we crowned the very fabulous Robert Eaton as our very own HAIR HERO!
Robert is a multi-award winning stylist and the Creative Director at Russell Eaton salons in Leeds and Barnsley. Robert Eaton is widely known within the industry for winning the much coveted British Hairdresser of the Year accolade in 2109
Robert’s career started in 1996 when he joined his father, Russell Eaton, in the family’s Barnsley salon as an apprentice. Rapidly rising to become one of the most respected names in the industry, Robert opened the family’s second salon, in Leeds, in 2012.
We caught up with Robert in lockdown 3.0 for an update!
MY TYPICAL DAY
My days really vary! Generally you will find me working on clients in our Leeds and Barnsley salons. I am also very hands on when it comes to running the business, which is a never-ending task as there is always something to do! I love managing and helping our teams. Then there is my creative work – one day I could be on a shoot for Wella Professionals and the next day working with Hot Tools on new ideas and concepts. I also love spending time at home with my lovely family.
BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT OF MY CAREER
It has to be winning British at the 2019 British Hairdressing Awards – I genuinely didn’t expect to win at all! Being nominated by my industry peers was a huge accomplishment in itself, so to win was a total shock. It was fantastic to achieve it for myself, but also for my family, who have been so supportive of my career.
I’M INSPIRED BY
I find inspiration everywhere – whether that be fashion trends, lifestyle influences, micro trends on social media or the evolving trends that I see working with our teams. I am very proud to still be a salon-based hairdresser, working on clients most days, and I think it is easy for us to focus on super creative shapes and colours; however, for me, it is always important that my work relates to what every day clients would like to wear.
I’m writing this in lockdown 3.0 which, for me, is chance to reflect, plan for the year ahead and think about lots of new ideas for when we are back in the salon. Watch this space!
HOT HAIR RIGHT NOW
We are seeing a big move towards working with, and enhancing, natural colour including grey blending and grombre hair. There’s been a subtle shift and clients are feeling really confident about embracing their natural hair colour and enhancing it to look even better than it already is. This results in colour that gives longevity and evolves with the client and transitions well between what you do in the salon and then looks equally as good a few weeks later, but just in a different way. There’s also a stronger move towards more lived-in hair, which is more natural in both colour and texture.
THE WORST THING A CLIENT CAN DO
DIY hair colour! I have seen so many home hair dye disasters and once it’s done it’s not easy to correct and clients can spend a lot of time and money getting their hair back to how they want it to look. So, my advice is to always speak to your hairdresser first if you are thinking of colouring your own hair with a box dye, although in my experience the quick fix is not worth it.
I’D LOVE TO GET MY HANDS ON
There’s loads of celebrities I would love to work on! Holly Willoughby for sure – she’s a prime example of someone who uses a box dye, which has resulted in her hair having a yellow tone to it. I could really transform Holly’s hair by breaking up her existing colour by adding lighter, brighter blonde tones.
I’M NEVER WITHOUT
My kit bag! It’s been built up over many years and I’ve got kit in there that I have used forever. From a colour perspective I am a huge fan of Wella’s colour portfolio and there are certain brands in there that I would never be able to work without, such as Illumina Colour and some of the new Color Fresh masks as well.
MY FAVOURITE HAIRSTYLE OF ALL TIME
It has to be an iconic bob shape, it continues to be one of the most modern shapes and suits so many different people, whether it’s a box bob or something that’s slightly softer and graduated.
MY DREAM CLIENT –
This is easy – my favourite clients have to be our loyal and long-standing clients that have supported our salons for so many years. Some of our clients have been coming to us since Dad opened the business over 40 years ago, and their children and grandchildren are now also clients. I love that we have that level of support from people in our community who have helped us build the business into the success it is.
